Getting the Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits You Need

Social security disability insurance works similarly to your auto or health insurance. When you work and pay social security (FICA) taxes, you gain credits. Generally, if you have worked for at least five of the last ten years and are under the age of 65, you may qualify for benefits.

The Social Security Administration has specific guidelines to determine disability. Generally, you may qualify for benefits if:

• You have been disabled for 12 months
• You have a disability that is expected to last 12 months
• You have a disability that is expected to end in death

The tricky part about this system is that you do not automatically get SSDI benefits. You must apply for them, and most of the people who apply are denied on their first application. You need a lawyer who will fight for you until you win.
